Retired priest Jules Speyrer dies
Long-time pastor in Basile also served in Ville Platte, Kaplan, Hathaway
Father Jules Conrad Speyrer, a retired priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette, died January 21 in Eunice, LA. He was 91.
He was ordained to the priesthood on December 22, 1943. His first assignment was as associate pastor in Kaplan from 1945 to 1950. He then served as associate pastor in Ville Platte from 1950 to 1955. From 1953 to 1956 he served as pastor in Hathaway.
He was assigned as pastor at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile in 1956 and served there until his retirement in 1994. After retirement, Father Speyrer continued his service in Basile and the surrounding area. He served as a priest for 65 years.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Augustine Catholic Church from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The funeral mass will follow at 12:00. Bishop Michael Jarrell of the Diocese of Lafayette will officiate. The burial will be at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery immediately after the funeral mass.
A reception will follow at the J.C. Speyrer Center in Basile. Quirk & Son, Basile, is in charge of arrangements.
Father Speyrer is survived by a sister, Eula Lee Speyrer Gallonstein and her husband, Robert, and a multitude of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
