Stepmom arrested when 9-year-old is found abused
Severely malnourished weighing 38 pounds, bruised and burned
LAKE CHARLES - According to Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office officials, the department received a complaint on February 19 from a woman living in Moss Bluff about the welfare of a 9-year-old child.
A Calcasieu deputy questioned the complainant about her concern and this is when she explained that the child was very thin and possibly being held against his will in his bedroom. She told the deputy that the child resided with his father and stepmother in Lake Charles.
The deputy arrived at the residence in south Lake Charles to follow up on the complaint. This is when he discovered a scene so despicable and vile that it is almost unimaginable.
Once inside the deputy noticed a dog leash that was tied from one door knob to another to keep the 9-year-old boy from opening his bedroom door.
The child, weighing 38 pounds, was found wearing a t-shirt, shorts and a diaper. He was laying on the a filthy foam mat and box spring covered with blood. The only linen found in the room was a bloody, urine saturated sheet. His body and face showed multiple bruises.
The child was transported to a hospital where he was treated for hypothermia due to malnutrition. Upon arrival, the child’s body temperature was an alarming 92 degrees.
During his 13-day hospitalization, the boy was also treated for second degree burns to his back cause by his stepmother, Jaime B. Day, 27, of Lake Charles, placing a sock of hot rice on his back.
During further investigation by Calcasieu authorities, it was determined that the child’s stepmother was starving the boy and forcing him to watch the rest of the family eat meals. Investigators also discovered that the boy was forced to eat his own feces and drink his own urine in order to survive the nightmare he lived.
The boy’s attending physician verified that his injuries and his extreme state of malnutrition is consistent with child abuse. They also determined, along with detectives, that this abuse had been ongoing from late last year.
Day has been charged with 25 counts of cruelty to a juvenile and two counts of second degree cruelty to a juvenile. Judge David Ritchie set her bond at $5.5 million.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the child’s father, Murry Dalton Day, 30, of Lake Charles. He is being charged with five counts of cruelty to a juvenile and one count of second degree cruelty to a juvenile. His bond has been set at $2 million.
Residing at the residence was two other minors. A four-year-old boy who is the biological child of the Day’s and a 6-year-old boy who is Jaime Day’s child who had been adopted by Murry Day.
The three children have been removed from the home, however thw two younger children showed no signs of abuse.
The biological mother of the nine-year-old boy had her parental rights terminated when the Office of Community Service determined physical abuse had occurred. This event, occuring six years ago, left the boy in Murry Day’s custody.
According to Calcasieu authorities, this incident is still under investigation with additional arrests possible. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Office Detective Michael Primeaux is the lead investigator on the heinous crime.
