Baseball injuries get weirder and weirder

Editor’s note: Just recently, Florida Marlins’ outfielder Chris Coghlan tore the meniscus in his knee as he attempted to shove a shaving cream pie in a teammate’s face after an exciting win. Here are a few other weird injuries that have occurred recently in our National Pastime.

--This year, San Diego Padre pitcher Mat Latos held back a sneeze, causing a pain that led to the 15-day disabled list.
--Earlier this year, Kendry Morales of the Los Angeles Angels broke his leg jumping on home plate after a teammate hit a game-winning home run.

Quotes from the immortal Yogi Berra...

Editor’s note: Each and every year, I get a request to rerun this particular column during baseball season. Without further adieu, here are quotes from former Yankee catcher and current Hall of Famer Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra.

-- “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” About when a game should be considered lost.

-- “I want to thank you for making this day necessary.” Said after a ceremony in his honor while making a speech.

BATON ROUGE -- LSU's road football game at Vanderbilt on Sept. 11 and the Tigers' home-opener against Mississippi State on Sept. 18 in Tiger Stadium will both carry 6 p.m. CDT kickoffs on ESPNU, the Southeastern Conference announced at 2010 SEC Media Days on Wednesday.

LSU appeared on ESPNU three times last season as part of the SEC's new 15-year contract with the ESPN Family of Networks. Eleven of the Tigers' 13 games last year were televised to a national audience and LSU's first three games of the 2010 campaign have already been picked up for national television.

A team of researchers soon will be surveying south Louisiana and Texas rice fields to determine how much food is available from farming and natural plants for migrating waterfowl along the coastal prairie.

The project is being done for the North American Waterfowl Management Plan – Gulf Coast Joint Venture. Partners in the project include the LSU AgCenter, Mississippi State University, Ducks Unlimited, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and several other state and federal organizations and nonprofit groups.

Of ‘slaves’ and ‘slave masters’...

By Mike Rizzuto
Sun Times-Journal Editor

There’s an old saying that goes something like this: “It’s better to remain quiet and be thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt.”

Had the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr. been aware of that old maxim and considered it just a few days ago, maybe he wouldn’t have made a complete fool of himself in referring to Cleveland Cavalier Owner Dan Gilbert as an “18th century slave master.”

And just who was the “slave” that Jackson was coming to the rescue of?
